Frequently asked questions about traveling in Ecuador with LatitudO
We’ve put together a list of the most frequent questions from people interested in traveling with us as well as from clients who have purchased our packages. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, please use the form at the end of the page to contact us. We’ll be happy to help you.
Most common general questions
Do I need a visa to enter Ecuador?
Most visitors do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, citizens from certain African and Asian countries, including China and India, require a visa to enter. Upon arrival, eligible travelers will receive a T3 stamp in their passport, allowing a stay of up to 90 days per calendar year without a visa. To verify if your country requires a visa for entry to Ecuador, please check the official guidelines here: Ecuador Visa Requirements.
Is it mandatory to have health and travel insurance?
All visitors to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands, must have valid health insurance for the duration of their stay. Immigration agents may ask for proof of health insurance upon entry, and failure to provide this can result in denial of access. Travel insurance is not required, but highly suggested. For full coverage during your trip, consider comprehensive travel insurance. Beyond medical and repatriation benefits, this insurance can protect against lost or stolen luggage, flight cancellations, and other unforeseen expenses. If you plan to participate in adventure activities or extreme sports in Ecuador, ensure that your policy covers these specific activities, especially if they are considered hazardous or occur in high-risk areas. Comprehensive travel insurance offers peace of mind and financial protection, allowing you to fully enjoy your trip.
Do you plan short itineraries or just long ones?
We can help you plan everything from a short daytrip to a multi-day adventure in Ecuador. Whether you have a day off from a trip you already planned and want to do something different, or if you want to plan the itinerary of your dreams, we are here to support you.

Bookings and reservations
What is the booking procedure? How do I pay?
To book a trip, you can contact us through the form at the end of this page, or write to us at latitud@latitud0.com
If you are looking for a custom trip, let us know and we will help you figure out the best itinerary. If you want to book one of our pre-established itineraries please send us an email with the following information:
- Personal details of all travelers (as per passport or ID): full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, email, and phone number.
- Flight Details: travel dates, international flight details, any national flight details (when not booked through Latitud0 Viajes Creativos S.A.).
- Special Requests: dietary restrictions, accessibility needs, any specific activities or tours you want to include.

Once we have received all your information, we will send you a final quote and you will need to make a 40% deposit to confirm your booking. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 45 days before the start of the trip. If you book within 45 days of departure, full payment is required. Payments can be made through credit card, SEPA direct debit, or bank transfer (we will provide you with the details).
What happens if I need to cancel my booking before traveling?
Our cancellation policies depend on selected packages, dates, and activities. For example, Galapagos cruises during peak season have strict cancelation policies compared to tours in the mainland. Before you confirm your booking we will always share the valid cancellation policy. We also recommend purchasing travel insurance.
You can take the following points a general guideline:
In addition to the bank processing fee, the following cancellation costs apply:
- If you cancel your trip 61 days prior to arrival you will be charged $200 USD fee.
- If you cancel your trip 31 days prior to arrival you will be charged 30% of the tour price.
- If you cancel your trip 16 days prior to arrival you will be charged 50% of the tour price.
- If you cancel your trip with less than 15 days prior to arrival, you will be charged 100% of the tour price.
Cancellation fees will automatically be discounted from deposits
Cancellation due to force majeure (an unforeseeable event, external to the parties of the contract, and unavoidable), must be covered by a travel insurance and will not be covered by Latitud0 Viajes Creativos S.A.
Can I book extra services or make changes after I have paid for the trip?
Yes of course. Once you’ve booked you can make changes and add services and activities to your itinerary at an extra cost. Our goal is to make sure you enjoy your visit and have a wonderful time and we’ll be more than happy to help you plan your dream trip.
How far in advance do I have to book a trip?
Our team specializes in arranging trips that can be booked with very little notice to more than a year in advance. For last-minute bookings, please contact us to check for availability before finalizing your reservation.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need more information or have any questions.
Travel and safety in Ecuador
When is the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands?
The Galapagos have distinct seasons. From December to May, known as the warm season, expect a mix of heat, rain, and sunshine, with temperatures between 27°C – 32°C (81°F – 89°F) and water temperatures from 21°C to 26°C (70°F – 79°F). From June to November, the climate is cooler and cloudier, with little rain but more wind and waves. Temperatures range from 21°C – 27°C (70°F – 81°F), and water temperatures drop to 18°C – 24°C (64°F – 75°F).
Is tipping common in Ecuador?
Yes, it’s normal to tip for good service in restaurants, bars and cafes in Ecuador – especially in touristy or business areas. The majority of restaurants include a 10% service fee in their bill, but additional tips are welcome. Tips are also appreciated in hotels, for tour guides, and at spas or salons. As a general rule, expect to tip around 10% of the bill. However, if you get exceptionally good service, you can say thank you with a tip closer to 15-20%.
Is it safe to travel in Ecuador?
Ecuador, like many Latin American countries, has experienced an increase in crime, including some areas affected by drug cartel activity. Traveling with a reliable agency can significantly enhance your safety and overall experience. Local agencies are familiar with safe zones, optimal routes, and provide experienced local guides. They also assist in emergencies and help you avoid risky areas, ensuring quality and safety through a network of suppliers and tour operators who organize worry-free activities and tours.
While petty crime is common in many South American cities, necessary precautions can help you avoid such issues. If you travel with us, we will provide you with information and advice on how to travel safely before your trip.
The Galapagos Islands are an exception to typical safety concerns; they are not only a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts but also one of the safest places in South America. Thanks to a small local population and a virtually non-existent crime rate, the islands offer an exceptionally secure environment for travelers.
What vaccinations are recommended or required?
No vaccinations are obligatory for entry into Ecuador, except for travelers arriving from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, who must present an international certificate of Yellow Fever vaccination.
However, the following vaccinations are recommended, especially for long-term stays or specific exposures:
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (whooping cough)
- MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella)
- Influenza and Pneumococcus
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid
Please consult your health provider before your travel to ensure you receive all necessary vaccinations for your trip.
